Deputy Head of Risk and Compliance Operations

About the role:

We are seeking a strategic and experienced Deputy Head of Risk and Compliance operations to strengthen the 1st line of defense with a strong emphasis on Compliance and supporting core Risk Management functions. This leadership role is instrumental in ensuring regulatory alignment, driving operational excellence, and overseeing five critical units within the first line of control.

What you’ll do:

  • Operational Oversight: Provide hands-on leadership across core risk & compliance functions, including:
    • 1st Line Compliance Operations
    • Merchant Risk Assessments
    • Transaction Monitoring & Fraud Detection
    • Financial Crime Investigations
    • Chargeback Management
  • Compliance Monitoring: supervising the execution of robust Compliance Monitoring frameworks, ensuring ongoing control effectiveness and timely remediation of any compliance operational insufficiencies.
  • Regulatory Readiness: Collaborate with the 2nd line and Legal to proactively respond to evolving regulatory obligations and ensure operational readiness for audits and inspections.
  • Policy & Procedure Governance: Maintain and continuously improve compliance/risk-related operational procedures, ensuring consistency with governance and regulatory expectations.
  • Reporting & Communication: Prepare and present reports to the Senior management and governance committees. Ensure compliance ops incidents and corrective actions are communicated effectively and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Card Scheme & Payment Systems Compliance: Ensure alignment of internal procedures with card scheme rules (e.g. Visa, Mastercard), SEPA, and other payment regulations.
  • Risk Framework Support: Assist in implementing and improving the 1st line risk management framework across all units, ensuring clear ownership and mitigation of key operational and financial crime risks.
  • Risk Intelligence: Stay ahead of emerging threats and regulatory changes by partnering with the 2nd line to assess impact and adapt controls and processes.
  • Risk Data & Systems: Oversee the development and integration of risk-related tools and reporting systems to enhance decision-making and transparency.
  • Incident Oversight: Support investigations into high-impact incidents, collaborating on root cause analysis, resolution, and reporting.

This role is perfect for you if you have:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in law, International Relations, Finance, Business Administration or related field. Relevant certifications (e.g. CAMS, ICA, CFE) are a strong plus.
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years in compliance and/or risk roles within a financial institution or fintech environment. Proven experience managing teams and complex operational functions.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office, with working knowledge of Power BI, monitoring systems, and compliance technology platforms.
  • Regulatory Expertise: Strong working knowledge of European financial services regulation, AML/CFT frameworks, and card scheme rules.
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required.
  • Soft Skills: Strategic thinker with high attention to detail. Excellent communicator, able to influence and collaborate across functions and levels of seniority.
