About the role:
This role sits within the Group Risk function and is responsible for developing a data-driven view of portfolio risks that may result in financial loss to the Group.
The scope includes fraud, chargebacks, transaction risk exposures, merchant credit and performance risk (including future service / deferred delivery exposures), and other merchant-related or contractual exposures (e.g. device financing or rental arrears).
The role combines deep analytical work with cross-functional collaboration, providing insights, challenge, and recommendations and solutions to 1LOD teams, while maintaining 2LOD independence. This is a high-visibility role with direct exposure to senior leadership, offering the opportunity to help shape the Portfolio Risk function as it evolves.
What you’ll do:
Portfolio Risk Analysis & Oversight:
Build and maintain a holistic view of loss drivers across the Group;
Monitor key metrics across fraud, chargebacks, merchant exposures, and other loss types;
Support the development of consistent risk measurement frameworks across entities, including EMIs;
Collaborate with the related process owners to review procedures and risks;
Ensure that controls are adequately designed and operating effectively to manage the portfolio risks within the assessed areas.
Fraud & Transaction Risk Insights:
Analyse fraud trends, typologies, and emerging risks;
Provide data-driven insights and constructive challenge to 1LOD fraud strategies;
Assess effectiveness of transaction monitoring frameworks and controls;
Support feedback loops between observed losses and detection/prevention improvements.
Chargebacks & Loss Drivers:
Analyse chargeback trends, root causes, and recovery performance;
Identify opportunities to reduce exposure and improve outcomes;
Support improvements in dispute handling and loss mitigation strategies.
Merchant Credit & Future Service Risk:
Analyse exposures from merchants collecting funds ahead of service delivery (e.g. travel, events, subscriptions);
Monitor risk concentrations across sectors and merchant segments;
Identify early warning signals of elevated risk (e.g. merchant distress, rising disputes);
Support the review of risk mitigation approaches such as rolling reserves, settlement structures, and exposure limits.
Broader Exposure Analysis:
Monitor additional sources of financial exposure, including device financing / rental arrears and merchant negative balances;
Contribute to building a consistent view of all loss-generating exposures.
Data & Analytics:
Work with large datasets to identify trends, anomalies, and risk drivers;
Develop dashboards, KPIs, and monitoring tools;
Translate analysis into clear, actionable insights and recommendations.
Risk reduction & Process improvement:
Partner with teams across Merchant Risk, Fraud, Chargebacks, Product, Sales etc;
Provide insights and recommendations to improve controls and reduce losses;
Identify clear tactical and strategic solutions in collaboration with the 1st LoD and track implementation of these solutions;
Contribute to implementation while maintaining 2LOD independence.
Governance & Reporting:
Support reporting to senior management, UK / Irish regulated entities, and Group;
Contribute to risk committee materials and portfolio risk updates;
Support the development of the Group loss narrative and risk appetite monitoring.
This role is perfect for you if you have:
Strong Analytical Capability;
Experience working with data (SQL, Python, or similar strongly preferred);
Ability to analyse complex datasets and identify meaningful insights;
Relevant Risk Experience 3–5 years’ experience in: Fraud risk / transaction risk or Payments/fintech or Acquiring /Risk analytics or consulting;
Understanding of chargebacks and transaction flows is a strong advantage;
Exposure to merchant or SME risk;
Understanding of how business models impact risk exposure;
Ability to move from data → insight → recommendation ;
Ability to work cross-functionally and influence discussions ;
Comfortable interacting with both business and technical teams.
Nice-to-Have:Experience in fintech, acquiring, or payment institutions;
Exposure to merchant / credit risk concepts;
Experience building dashboards or analytical tools.
