Why Paynovate?

Paynovate is a Belgium-based fintech with more than 80 talented employees. As a regulated e-money institution, we design and operate payment solutions in a complex and fast-evolving environment, where reliability, security, and operational excellence are essential.

We value ownership, pragmatism, and collaboration. Our teams are trusted to take responsibility, deliver meaningful outcomes, and continuously improve how we build and run our systems.

Context
Paynovate has evolved from a startup into a scale-up, bringing new expectations around stability, standardisation, automation, and operational maturity, particularly in a regulated environment.

Our on-prem infrastructure has grown over several generations and carries a level of technical debt and implicit knowledge. A key priority is to regain full ownership of the infrastructure by stabilising existing systems, documenting them thoroughly, and ensuring knowledge is shared and sustainable.

In parallel, transitioning from on-prem to cloud is a strategic and critical step to support scalability and resilience. This role sits at the core of that journey: professionalising today’s infrastructure while laying the foundations for a controlled and well-prepared cloud migration.

What you’ll do

As a System Engineer, you will take ownership of Paynovate’s infrastructure, ensuring its stability, security, and long-term evolvability. You will operate and improve a critical on-prem environment while laying the foundations for a future transition to cloud.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Infrastructure operations & ownership
Operate, maintain, and stabilise our on-prem infrastructure, ensuring availability, performance, and security of production systems in a 24/7 environment.

  • Documentation & knowledge consolidation
Capture, structure, and maintain infrastructure knowledge to reduce dependency on individuals and support long-term sustainability.

  • Cloud readiness & migration preparation
Contribute to the design and preparation of a future AWS environment (architecture, tooling, processes), and help ensure the organisation is ready for a controlled and secure migration.

  • Collaboration & delivery
Work closely with development teams to support deployments, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions), and troubleshoot infrastructure or deployment issues.

  • Reliability & continuous improvement
Monitor systems and databases, respond to incidents, and proactively propose improvements around automation, security, performance, and reliability, aligned with best practices and business constraints

What you bring

You’re a hands-on and accountable System Engineer, comfortable working in both on-prem and cloud environments, and motivated by building reliable, well-understood systems.

  • Technical foundation: 2+ years of experience in systems or infrastructure engineering. Solid exposure to AWS, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible), Linux environments, Docker, Bash scripting, and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions is a plus).

  • Hybrid infrastructure mindset: Comfortable operating and stabilising on-prem systems while preparing and contributing to a future cloud environment, including highly available, production-critical platforms (24/7).

  • Ownership & problem-solving: Strong troubleshooting skills, a structured approach to incidents, and a sense of ownership over systems from diagnosis to resolution.

  • Documentation & communication: Able to document systems clearly, capture knowledge, and explain technical topics effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What we offer

  • A key role in a growing and profitable fintech, operating in a regulated, mission-critical environment where infrastructure quality truly matters.
  • A position with real ownership and visible impact, within a company that trusts its people and values accountability.

  • A collaborative culture with experienced, thoughtful colleagues working toward shared, concrete goals.

  • A scale-up environment offering meaningful technical challenges, learning opportunities, and long-term growth.

  • A modern and flexible way of working, with hybrid work embedded as a structural part of how we operate.

  • A comprehensive and market-competitive compensation package, including:

    • 32 days of holiday

    • Mobility budget

    • Meal vouchers

    • Health and group insurance
