What’s it all about?

This role is a position within a fun, supportive and hard-working Commercial Law Team, who manage a wide range of commercial, technology, and product legal matters. This Team is part of a larger Legal and Compliance Department (including Competition law, Regulatory law, Corporate law, Data Privacy and Employment law and Compliance specialists), which has consistently had some of the highest engagement scores and prides itself on a creative, can-do approach.

The role works closely with Visa’s Europe Region Product team based in the Paddington Hub and Product teams in Visa’s regional offices around Europe.

The Commercial Law Team works at the cutting edge of new payment technologies, innovation and the fintech industry in an increasingly regulated environment, which brings unique and novel challenges in the commercial/technology law space.

What we expect of you day to day…

  • Provide a wide range of legal support and assistance to Visa’s Europe Region Product team.

  • Provide legal advice and support relating to matters such as the launch of new products, bespoke agreements for key clients, development of template contracts, and other general commercial matters.

  • Draft, review, negotiate and advise on a wide range of contracts and legal issues relating to the matters above.

  • Identify competition/anti-trust, data protection and financial regulatory issues, and when necessary contact and consult with internal members of the Legal and Compliance Department and/or external counsel on these issues.

  • Identify the need for external legal advice and engage and manage appropriate external counsel on a range of legal issues across Visa’s Europe Region.

  • Work with other Visa departments across the globe to ensure contracts and advice accurately reflect business needs and policies as they develop.

  • Responsible for management of day-to-day legal queries and business deals, taking the lead on all commercial legal activities.

  • Manage, develop and maintain internal and external relationships to facilitate the effective delivery of legal advice and assistance.

  • Provide training to identified business areas on law, processes and policies.

  • Proactively contribute to the Legal and Compliance Division’s planning, cohesion, consistency in advice, and the general efficiency and effectiveness of the division as a whole.

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.

Qualifications

What we’re after…

Basic qualifications:

  • Qualified lawyer in England, ideally 2-4 years PQE. We will consider candidates who have qualified in other common law jurisdictions with suitable experience.
  • Previous experience of working as in-house legal counsel within a regulated and/or technology business (bonus if a payments or fintech business), or equivalent in private practice.
  • Strong academics and training, including demonstrable experience drafting and negotiating complex technology contracts and deftly managing stakeholder / client expectations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills along with a demonstrated ability to collaborate with internal and external clients.
  • Demonstrable experience collaborating effectively in a team environment as well as on own initiative.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a varied and busy workload.
  • Positive attitude, high level of integrity and intellectual curiosity.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the payments industry (and applicable regulation) or financial services environment.
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrable experience advising on, consumer law regulations in Europe.
  • Previous experience of cross-border and multi-jurisdictional contracts, and previous experience instructing and managing external counsel regarding the same.
