Job Description

This Senior Associate Counsel position sits on the legal team that works on Visa’s global M&A and investments, in support of Visa’s corporate development and venture investment teams. This role will cover M&A and investments in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in addition to supporting M&A and investments in other jurisdictions.

This role is also part of the larger European Legal, Regulatory & Compliance Division, which has consistently had some of the highest engagement scores in the company and prides itself on a creative, can-do approach. This job is based in our London, Paddington office, with the expectation being 3 days per week in the office.

The Visa legal team works at the cutting edge of new payment technologies, innovation and the fintech industry in an increasingly regulated environment, which brings unique and novel challenges to our legal work.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide a wide range of legal support and assistance to Visa’s global M&A and ventures teams, including exploring acquisition and investment opportunities and executing transactions.
  • Working with the global head of M&A and investments for Legal, support transaction teams from the Legal and Compliance groups and coordinate with other functions.
  • Draft, review, negotiate and advise on a range of contracts and legal issues relating to the matters above.
  • Conduct and oversee due diligence.
  • Coordinate and contribute to integration efforts for newly acquired businesses.
  • Supervise outside counsel and effectively manage legal costs.
  • Work with other Visa departments across the globe to ensure contracts and advice accurately reflects business needs and policies as they develop.
  • Provide training to identified business areas on law, processes and policies.
  • Develop initiatives for improving internal processes, form agreements and service levels.
  • Deliver consistent, strategic, risk-weighted, business-focused legal counsel.
  • Untangle and analyze complex legal issues.

Qualifications

  • Qualified lawyer in the U.K or U.S, ideally 4+ years PQE. We will consider candidates who have qualified in other jurisdictions.
  • Demonstrable experience as a lawyer at an international law firm, with a primary focus on M&A matters.
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently with minimal instruction and oversight.
  • Passion for excellence.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Excellent judgment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple, complex projects simultaneously under deadline pressure.
  • Experience in regulated industries or in payments or technology industries a plus but not required.
  • Open to periodic travel.
  • In-house experience (secondment or permanent role) desirable.
