Job Description

Team Summary

Visa owns the most recognizable global brand in the financial services industry. Maintaining trust in that brand and differentiating Visa from competitors is crucial. Risk management is one of the key pillars of Visa’s strategy of Championing Security and Deepening Partnerships. The Risk function plays a critical role to support the enterprise and operational risk activities of the company.

What a Director Risk Management does at Visa:

Reporting to the Head of Risk, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand (SMT), this role will be entrusted with a broad portfolio of responsibilities including Strategic Risk Management, Ecosystem Risk (Fraud & Data Security) and managing Client Risk for Global and Regional Tech Partnership clients.

The successful candidate will support the Global and Regional Tech Partnership client portfolio in risk management, focusing on balancing fraud, authentication, authorization, and regulatory risks while improving payment success. The role requires close collaboration with in-market and Global Risk teams and coordination with Asia Pacific Global and Regional Tech Partnership teams.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and execute a comprehensive risk plan that is consistent with regional landscape, global risk strategy and priorities for the client.

  • Serve as a trusted strategic advisor as a member of the Tech Partnership leadership team, influencing product, technology, and go-to-market decisions through a risk lens.
  • Execute internal and external risk management programs that support clients and the broader payments ecosystem.
  • Promote and support client adoption of Visa risk products, solutions, and initiatives.

Manage relationships with Tech Partnership clients to:

  • Identify opportunities to enhance the payments ecosystem and advance risk management best practices.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with key ecosystem participants to advance risk-related objectives across the client portfolio.
  • Lead the resolution of fraud and data breach incidents and influence upstream product and partner design to prevent recurrence.

Lead responsible innovation initiatives with Visa’s clients to mitigate risk while enabling the adoption of new and emerging technologies.

  • Assess emerging risks, innovation risks, and new business models, and provide guidance to clients on potential impacts.
  • Leverage local market insights to contribute to Visa’s risk thought leadership and strategic positioning.
  • Guide clients through the complexity of payment innovation, balancing growth, security, and regulatory compliance

Prepare reports, briefings, and other written materials to keep management informed of risk activities, issues, and opportunities.

  • Communicate risk-related trends and developments to the Tech Partnership team through regular, structured reporting.
  • Gather and synthesize feedback on the effectiveness of Visa’s risk management strategies and programs, and benchmark Visa’s performance against other payment networks and industry participants.
  • Drive proactive risk communication and collaboration across internal and external stakeholders to support the safety, security, and long-term growth of the Visa payment system

Why this is important to Visa:

As a key member of the AP Global and Regional Tech Partnership team, this role will advise the team on strategies related to complex operational, financial, legal and regulatory risk exposures related to their portfolio.

The Director, Risk Management will be the catalyst for transforming the AP Tech Partnership risk strategy and solutions for the clients, with the end goal of championing payments security, maintaining the integrity of the payment ecosystem and forging deeper client relationships working very closely with the regional counterparts of the Tech Partnership clients.

Projects you will be a part of:

As the Director, Risk Management Global and Regional Tech Partnership, you will be a key member of the Asia Pacific Risk Team and the key liaison to the Tech Partnership client team. Projects examples:

  • Manage relationships with tech partnership clients (including resolving fraud & data breach events, providing stakeholder training, responding to adhoc queries & analytics requirements, and identifying opportunities to enhance the payment ecosystem and advance risk management best practice)
  • Lead responsible innovation initiatives to mitigate risks and embrace technology improvements
  • Roll out and support AP pilots for Risk related initiatives for the tech partnership based on the global roadmap and regional priorities

You will be the AP key subject matter expert in advising best practices in risk management and controls for our clients portfolio.

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in the office will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager.

Qualifications

What you will need:

  • 12 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 8-10 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 6+ years of work experience with a PhD
  • The ideal candidate is an experienced merchant and payments fraud risk professional with 10+ years of experience, offering a strong blend of strategic leadership and hands-on problem solving across both established and fast‑paced, dynamic environments. Candidates with payments experience—particularly in payments fraud and risk within merchants, big tech, acquirers, or processors—are strongly preferred.
  • Relevant Industry Exposure
  • Strong knowledge of payments risk management, Visa Rules, industry practices, trends, and emerging threats.
  • Proven operational and strategic experience in acquiring and merchant risk and fraud management, delivering actionable outcomes.
  • Deep expertise in acquiring operations and risk, with the ability to effectively advise internal and external stakeholders, including merchants.
  • Strong understanding of merchant risk from an acquirer’s perspective, with the ability to bridge the gap between acquirers and their merchant clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to combine operational excellence with strategic clarity in client engagements, translating complex risk insights into practical, high‑impact recommendations.
  • Strong analytical capabilities, including the ability to design and use metrics to support data-driven decision making.
  • Exceptional Collaboration and Communication Skills
  • An effective communicator, comfortable engaging with clients and industry participants in both verbal and written settings.
  • Deep understanding of client business models, user journeys, and customer experience, enabling tailored and impactful recommendations.
