The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Consultant, Site Reliability Engineering—a senior individual contributor who acts as a technical leader, architect, and force multiplier within Pismo.

This role is designed for engineers who operate with high autonomy, thrive in ambiguity, and take end‑to‑end ownership of complex systems. As a Senior Consultant, you will define technical direction, set engineering standards, and influence how reliability engineering is practiced across teams and products. While this role remains hands‑on, a significant portion of your impact will come from technical leadership, mentorship, and architectural decision‑making.

You will work across squads and domains, often where problems are not clearly defined, and success requires judgment, influence, and deep technical expertise.

What You'll Do

Technical Leadership & Architecture

  • Act as a technical authority for reliability, scalability, and operational excellence within your domain.
  • Define and evolve architecture and engineering standards adopted across multiple teams.
  • Lead initiatives where the problem space is ambiguous, identifying gaps, defining solutions, and driving them to completion.
  • Make pragmatic trade‑offs between short‑term delivery and long‑term architectural health.

End‑to‑End Ownership

  • Own systems and platforms across their full lifecycle: design, implementation, deployment, operations, and ongoing evolution.
  • Be accountable for outcomes, including availability, performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Drive improvements in monitoring, incident response, error reduction, and operational maturity to support highly available financial systems.

Organizational Impact

  • Influence the technical roadmap and priorities for your team and partner teams based on identified business and engineering needs.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Security, and Platform teams to ensure solutions align with Pismo’s broader goals.
  • Break down large, complex initiatives into phased, deliverable milestones, guiding teams through execution.

Mentorship & Force Multiplication

  • Act as a mentor at scale, leveling up engineers through code reviews, design discussions, pairing, and technical guidance.

  • Review and remediate complex or underperforming systems, sharing expertise to unblock teams.
  • Enable teams consuming your platforms to solve complex problems more effectively through guidance and best practices.

Engineering Culture & Talent

  • Serve as a steward of Pismo’s engineering culture, modeling high standards for quality, ownership, and collaboration.
  • Actively participate in hiring and interview processes, helping to raise the technical bar with every hire.
  • Influence how reliability and operational excellence are valued and practiced across the organization.

External Influence (Optional but Encouraged)

  • Represent Pismo externally through technical talks, articles, or community engagement.
  • Contribute to industry conversations around reliability engineering, cloud platforms, and large‑scale distributed systems.

What You Bring

Experience & Mindset

  • Proven experience operating as a senior individual contributor on complex, distributed, cloud‑native systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead without authority, influencing technical direction across teams.
  • Comfort operating with high ambiguity, defining problems as well as solutions.
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability for outcomes, not just delivery.

Technical Expertise

  • Deep expertise in at least one general‑purpose programming language (e.g., Java, Go, Python, JavaScript).
  • Strong background in designing and operating highly reliable, scalable systems.
  • Hands‑on experience with modern cloud platforms and tooling (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines).
  • Solid understanding of observability, incident management, and production operations at scale.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, product partners, and leadership.
  • Experience working closely with Product, QA, DevOps, and Agile teams.
  • Track record of mentoring and growing other engineers.

Why Join Pismo

  • Work on systems that support global financial infrastructure at massive scale
  • Operate with high autonomy and trust
  • Influence technical direction across teams and products
  • Grow as a senior technical leader within a world‑class engineering organization
