Job Description

About the role

At Wise, we're not just developing a product; we're redefining the financial landscape. As a Senior Software Engineer in the Cloud Platform squad you will be working on critical services and systems that enable seamless and cost-effective financial experiences for millions of customers worldwide.

Why This Role Matters:

The Cloud Platform squad represents a group of teams responsible for enabling Wise’s hundreds of microservices to run, scale and integrate with each other. Our teams work together to provide the backbone of Wise’s infrastructure through a robust and reliable platform capable of handling millions of transactions a second, and a world class service mesh that ensures seamless service discovery and request proxying to the correct destination. You will be joining Connect or Compute, leading work that has a direct impact on the reliability of our infrastructure services and Wise’s success. As one of our senior engineers, you will also be a technical mentor for your peers.
Specifically our teams:

  • Run and maintain multiple Kubernetes clusters that serve all Wise’s teams and hundreds of microservices. (Compute)

  • Own the primary routing points for public or non-public connections into and out of Wise’s infrastructure. (Connect)

  • Develop and operate Wise’s Envoy-based service mesh on top of Kubernetes and an in-house built control plane. (Connect)

  • Implement and maintain tooling that provides workload identity, encryption, and service connectivity controls. (Both teams)

How we work

Ensuring the lowest money transfer fees and timely transactions means we operate with a strong belief of reducing toil, iterative implementation and reusable design, all while prioritising reliability, security, and maintainability.

Our team structure encourages practical collaboration across disciplines such as security and observability, streamlining communication and process integration. We are committed to continuous learning, and value creative problem solving, curiosity and drive for making things better. We never work in isolation, and collaborate towards the best possible technical solutions that directly support our customers' needs and the company's mission.

Qualifications

What will you be working on?

  • Help drive complex initiatives that scale, maintain and evolve a variety of high availability backend and infrastructure services.

  • Reduce complexity, toil and risk by identifying bottlenecks and improving system efficiency at both infrastructure (AWS) and application levels.

  • Lead initiatives that expand our capabilities in the cloud-native landscape, from developing Kubernetes operators to enhancing our service mesh infrastructure.

  • Ensure critical system upgrades and maintenance and participate in the team on-call rotation

  • Be a force multiplier by actively mentoring peers and collaborating with cross-functional teams to share knowledge, support engineering efforts, and refine our engineering practices.

What do you need?

We are fully aware that it is uncommon for a candidate to have all skills required and we fully support everyone in learning new skills with us. So if you have some of those listed below and are eager to learn more, we do want to hear from you!

  • Proficient in Go (preferred), Python, Java or C++ and a willingness to learn

  • Strong backend experience working and maintaining APIs and an interest in infrastructure

  • Production experience of building, operating, and scaling microservices in a cloud environment such as AWS or GCP.

  • Production experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes (preferred) or Nomad.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with data intensive applications and high availability

  • Familiarity or interest in application level networking or service meshes

  • Good sysadmin skills (Linux, debugging issues with disk, networking, OS performance etc)
